MISLEADING: Collage asserting Bongbong Marcos’ presence in disaster response

Updated: Jan 20, 2022

Red Bullets:

Claim: A photo collage claims to show how presidential aspirant Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. participated in disaster responses in various parts of the Philippines.

Rating: Partly False (Misleading)

The truth: The collage included pictures not taken during the event they were labeled with, particularly “2009, Ondoy” and “2014, Glenda.” The rest of the pictures were labeled with the right event.

Why fact-check: Upon checking for similar posts, it was found that several pages and individuals also posted the same collage on Facebook and Twitter. It was used by Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s supporters in their narrative that news outlets are not reporting his actions, which could mislead the people into believing such narrative.

Red Totality:

On Dec. 22, 2021, Facebook page Pala utwasan – marcos loyalist posted a photo collage featuring Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s supposed relief operations in response to calamities like the Marawi siege and Supertyphoon Yolanda, among others.

The post was meant to refute claims that Marcos did not extend help to survivors of calamities and allege that the media were simply not covering his initiatives. While it aimed to correct false information, it also carried inaccuracies.

The collage included two photos that were incorrectly labeled, specifically the ones with “2009, Ondoy” and “2014, Glenda'' written across them. The former, showing Marcos hugging an elderly woman while holding a gift pack, was not taken during a relief operation for tropical storm Ondoy. The photo showed a scene from the 49th Foundation Day celebration of Barangay Tatalon, Quezon City on Dec.22, 2009, where Marcos spoke and gave away Christmas goods. The photo was included in a press release titled, “Barangay Tatalon Loves Bongbong Marcos,” a copy of which can be found on bongbongmarcos.com.

The photo labeled “2014, Glenda” was not taken during a relief operation and was instead from a gift distribution on Dec. 21, 2015. It was originally posted on his Facebook and Twitter accounts with the caption: “Pagbibigayan ang tunay na diwa ng kapaskuhan, kaya’t sana’y huwag nating kaligtaan ang ating mga kababayang nangangailangan. #ProgresibongBukas #BBM2016 #VPBongbong #BongbongMarcos #MyVice.”

As of this writing, the Facebook post has gained 152 reactions, 26 comments and 388 shares. The creator of the collage was difficult to trace because the photo was not cited properly and a lot of users posted it around the same time.
